Terms of Service
Effective date: 16 October 2026
These terms apply to the Bonnet iPhone app and this website. By using Bonnet, you agree to them. If you don't, please don't use the app.
What Bonnet Does
Bonnet is a nighttime ritual app. It is designed to make late-night phone use harder, deliberately, on a schedule you set. Specifically:
- Wind-Down. For the hour before your chosen time your apps stay open, but Bonnet interrupts with a red screen at usage thresholds while a countdown runs to the lock. The red tint itself is an iOS Color Filters setting Bonnet cannot set — you build it once in Shortcuts from the times Bonnet gives you, and Wind-Down runs without the red if you skip that.
- The Protocol. After that, Bonnet uses Apple's Screen Time framework to shield the apps you selected, until your chosen end time.
- Spoken re-entry. To reopen a shielded app you say a phrase you wrote, aloud, several times. You choose how many repetitions in advance.
- The re-entry ladder. Each successful unlock grants less time than the one before: 10 minutes, then 8, 6, 4, and 2. Every later break that night is 2 minutes. The app does not refuse you and does not grant zero minutes.
Bonnet is built to cost more effort than it's worth, not to be impossible to escape. Two limits are real and deliberate, though. While a night is already running, a change to your hours is saved and dated for the following night rather than taking effect tonight. And while apps are shielded, Bonnet tells iOS to refuse app deletion — that restriction is phone-wide and includes Bonnet itself. It lifts during any re-entry break and at your wake hour, which is when the app can be deleted.
Not a Medical Service
Bonnet is a general wellness and habit tool. It is not a medical device, and nothing in the app or on this site is medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. It is not a treatment for insomnia, any sleep disorder, or any mental health condition.
If you're concerned about your sleep or your health, talk to a qualified professional. Don't delay doing so because of anything Bonnet tells you.
Not a Safety or Emergency Device
Bonnet shields only the apps you selected, and emergency calling is never restricted. Notifications still arrive — iOS gives no app the power to silence another. Do not rely on Bonnet to block anything in a situation where being blocked could cause harm. Software fails; a shield may not appear, or may not clear, when you expect.
Device Permissions
Bonnet asks for Screen Time access to shield apps, and for microphone and speech recognition access to hear your phrase. You can decline or revoke any of these in iOS Settings. Some features simply won't work without them, and the app will tell you which.
No Account, No Server
Bonnet has no account system of its own and no server. Your phrase, your hours, your night history and your voice notes are stored on your phone and sent nowhere — the Analytics tab is arithmetic over those local records. Signing in with Apple or Google is optional, every feature works without it, and the identifier it returns stays on the device.
You're still responsible for what you put into the app, including the phrase you write. But because nothing leaves the phone, there is nothing for us to hold, hand over, or lose, and deleting the app deletes all of it.
Bonnet isn't directed at children under 13. The app collects no information from anyone.
Cost
Bonnet is free. Version 1.0.2 has no subscription, no trial and no in-app purchases — there is nothing in the app that can be bought. If that ever changes, we'll say so clearly before it applies to you, and existing terms won't change retroactively.
Acceptable Use
Please don't:
- Use Bonnet to restrict another person's device without their knowledge and consent
- Reverse engineer, resell, or redistribute the app
- Tamper with the app, or work around it on a device that isn't yours
- Use it for anything unlawful
Availability
We may change, suspend, or discontinue features. There is no service of ours for the app to depend on, but it does depend on Apple's frameworks — Screen Time, speech recognition, notifications — which we don't control. We don't promise uninterrupted or error-free operation.
Ending These Terms
You can stop at any time by deleting the app — during a night, that means after a re-entry break or at your wake hour, once the deletion lock lifts. There is no account for us to close and no service for us to cut off. We may stop offering or updating the app.
Disclaimers and Liability
Bonnet is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. We don't warrant that it will improve your sleep, change your habits, or reliably block anything.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we aren't liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of Bonnet, including anything you missed while apps were shielded.
Some jurisdictions don't allow these exclusions, in which case they may not apply to you.
Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms. If we make a material change, we'll update the effective date above and note it in the app or on this page. Continuing to use Bonnet after that means you accept the revision.
